It seems like most modern success stories begin by getting that phone call. The one that changes everything. Hell, the TV show Entourage basically used The Phone Call as a plot device that lasted 96 episodes. Technology has evolved to the point where having to camp the rotisserie phone or losing a signal is pretty much a thing of the past, so those classic stories will eventually fade away, but a good Unbelieving Hang Up will always be timeless. That’s why Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre’s first interaction is so brilliant.
The setup: It’s the early ’90s, and Dr. Dre is at a bachelor party with Warren G, who puts on a tape of Snoop freestyling. Dr. Dre is impressed, saying, “I’m like, ‘That’s Snoop?’ Man, this is a f*cking diamond in the rough and we need to polish it up!’” Dre ends up getting Snoop’s number, calls him, then is immediately hung up on by the Doggfather. It’s a story that will go down in legend, and we’re probably going to get more like it when Defiant Ones — HBO’s docu-series on Dr. Dre and Jimmy Lovine drops.
Of course, Dre would call back, Snoop would eventually answer, and the rest would go down in hip hop history.
The first episode of the four-part series will debut July 9th on HBO.
