As he has shown time and time again in his four years with the Warriors, Andre Iguodala is an essential part of Golden State’s success. Iguodala’s versatility off the bench has been key for the Warriors as his play-making and defense have helped Golden State win two of the last three championships.
But despite Iguodala’s importance to Golden State, there is the slight chance that the Warriors’ sixth man may not be on the team next season. Iguodala is a free agent and is looking to earn some serious money in what likely could be his last big contract since he is 33 years old. The Warriors are committed to bringing Iguodala back, but while he too would like to return, he is testing the free agency waters to see what other types of deals are out there for him.
One such deal could exist in San Antonio as the Spurs will be the first team to meet with Iguodala once free agency starts at midnight on Saturday.
From ESPN’s Chris Haynes:
Soon as free-agency period begins, Andre Iguodala will meet with the San Antonio Spurs in Los Angeles, league sources tell ESPN.

With his all-around talent and ability to play multiple positions, Iguodala would be an ideal fit for the Spurs. He also just seems like the type of player Spurs coach Gregg Popovich would love to have on his team. But again, this is just a meeting, and Iguodala may have other meetings lined up as well.
Leaving a championship team and a perennial contender like the Warriors may seem foolish, but Iguodala is also taking these meetings to drive up whatever offer Golden State is planning on giving him. The Spurs are also a good team for Iguodala to use to try and increase Golden State’s offer since San Antonio has a great culture and are a championship contender. If Golden State doesn’t want one of their Western Conference rivals to get better, then they likely will give Iguodala the deal he wants.
Iguodala is no fool and is clearly doing what is best for him, which after helping the Warriors win two titles is well in his rights to do.
