Two tourists from California were arrested in Rome on Saturday after allegedly deciding to carve their initials into the wall of the Colosseum and then taking a selfie. According to La Stampa, the 21 and 25-year-old strayed from their tour group to engrave the letters “J” and “N” into the walls of the historical landmark. The women were immediately reported to authorities, who charged them with “aggravated damage on a building of historical and artistic interest.”

“We apologize for what we did – they said – we regret it, but we did not imagine it was something so serious. We’ll remember for a lifetime. “

They would have gotten away with it, too, if it wasn’t for that meddling selfie.
