Want to look at your favorite 8-bit NES classics in a whole new way? Well, now you can thanks 3DNes Emulator, a new browser app that somehow magically transforms classic 8-bit games into polygonal 3D dioramas. Okay, the program isn’t actually magic, but I don’t have the slightest idea how it does what it does, so it’s magic to me. You can check out a trailer featuring a 2.5D Super Mario Bros. above.
Here’s another trailer featuring Contra, Mega Man, Zelda II, Super Mario Bros. 3, Castlevania and a few other golden oldies.
Looking at the above video, it seems some games seem to work better with 3DNes Emulator than others. Zelda II and Castlevania looks fantastic, almost like official 2.5D remakes, while Mario 3 is just a bit rough. Still, the fact that this works at all is pretty damn amazing. Oh, and if you really want to blow your mind, you can play your 3D-ized NES classics in first-person mode…
You can check out 3DNes Emulator right here, although, for whatever reason, the program only works in Firefox. Of course, you’ll also have to find your own NES ROMs. If anybody needs me, I’ll be playing 3D versions of Duck Hunt and Battletoads all afternoon.
