Bethesda At E3 2016: ‘Dishonored 2,’ ‘Quake Champions’ And More

Yesterday was a busy day for Bethesda at E3. They rolled out a remastered Skyrim, and announced new expansions and a VR version for Fallout 4. But that wasn’t the only stuff they debuted, and some of it has been in the works for quite a while.

The sequel to one of the best debuts from a game studio in recent memory has a new “gameplay” trailer and it looks like Arkane isn’t resting on their laurels. Mostly we learn that Corvo is looking a bit rough after escaping with Emily to what looks like this series’ version of French Morocco, and that Emily has a unique powerset that includes hauling enemies across a massive number of spaces and tagging a bunch of them to kill in one shot. It also hints that the Outsider, the game’s bizarre amoral Elder God, has a bit more of a role to play in the story. It’s coming November 11.

Prey

Possibly the biggest surprise of the conference, Prey, formerly Prey 2, was revealed. Despite the name, it looks like the title’s got little to do with the beloved 2006 PC game, which had a lengthy and tortured development history of its own. Instead it’s looking more like Arkane’s tribute to the System Shock games, right down to your packing a wrench in one clip. Of particular note, the creepy enemies appear to be able to turn into inanimate objects, and possibly even people, so this promises to be a right paranoid time on a spaceship. It also looks like there’s a mind screw factor at work, considering the Groundhog Day nature of the trailer and the ending.

Quake Champions

Yep, iD Software’s classics are all getting reinvented, apparently. After Wolfenstein: The New Order was an enormous hit and Doom brought the series back to what people wanted, it appears Quake is up next. That said, it’s a bit different from the ’90s metal-solo of a video game. The champions in question all have unique abilities, it’s an arena shooter, and intriguingly, it’s aimed largely at the PC market. The YouTube video even brags about frame rates in its copy. There’s no release date, though, so we’ll see how this one comes together.

Wolfenstein: The New Colossus

Sadly, we didn’t get a new trailer or a release date for what appears to be the next Wolfenstein game, but Bethesda did hide an intriguing reference in its presentation that would imply it’s in the works. The title itself hints that BJ, or possibly another Nazi-slayer, is going to Nazified America,  as “The New Colossus” is the poem engraved on the Statue of Liberty. It also happens to be the poem the hero of the game recites during the ending, so make of that what you will.

It looks like there’s a little something for everybody, but keep your eyes peeled today. Microsoft will kick off E3 at 9:30am PST/12:30pm EST, Ubisoft at 1pm PST/4pm EST, and Sony, always good for at least one totally out of left field announcement, starts their conference at 6pm PST/9pm EST.
