Back in 2012, Quantic Dream (Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls) showed off Project Kara, a demo meant to demonstrate the then-cutting-edge facial rendering and motion capture tech Quantic Dream was tinkering with. The tech demo already looks fairly dated by today’s standards, but it turned heads when it was first released, leading many to speculate whether it might become the basis of an actual game. Well, three-and-a-half years later, Sony and Quantic Dream have announced Project Kara will become a game, and that game is named Detroit.
In the original Kara demo, we see an android come off the assembly line, become self-aware then venture out into the world. Detroit continues on from that point, as we find out the android factory Kara was built in is located in, you guessed it, Detroit. Tough break. You can check out the new trailer for Detroit above, and the original Project Kara demo below.
We don’t have much indication of how Detroit will play, although if it’s like past Quantic Dream games, it will likely revolve around Kara wandering around a futuristic Detroit having “experiences” and adventures you’ll engage with via motion controls and quicktime button presses. The juxtaposition of sleek android tech and the urban decay of Detroit is interesting, although I don’t particularly trust David Cage to make his big, important points with anything resembling subtlety. This trailer was already a bit ham-fisted in parts. That said, however it turns out, I have a feeling Detroit will give us plenty to talk about.
