We’ve only had a few glimpses of the new critters available to catch in Pokémon Sun and Moon, but so far things are looking quite promising. Sure, not everybody is a fan of dorky seal Popplio, but the game’s other two starters are pretty solid! Well, prepare to get a little worried.
A new Japanese Pokémon Sun and Moon trailer unveils seven new critters and, um, a lot of them are pocket monsters only a mother could love. Okay, we are getting a new cute electric rodent, but the new guy, named Togedemaru in Japan, is no Pikachu.
Now for the weird stuff. We have a box-shaped caterpillar creature that looks like a subway car.
This wonky butterfly/hummingbird first draft.
A thing that makes no visual sense at all.
And this fish. This sexy, sexy fish.
To be fair, Falkor from The Neverending Story is also in the game. So kudos for that, Nintendo.
As you might expect, fan reaction to this latest batch of critters has been divisive, to say the least.

People have been joking about Pokémon running out of ideas for ages, but it seems like we may finally be nearing the bottom of the barrel. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. It might even force the series to focus more on gameplay innovation rather than, “Here’s another 100 new Pokémans, so have at it!” Until then, we’ve all got some sexy fish to catch.
