A couple years back, news hit that Sony was looking to make a movie out its popular Gran Turismo racing games. Since then, we haven’t heard much about the project, likely because somebody realized the Gran Turismo games have no plot or characters, and thus making a movie out of them is sort of a silly idea.
Well, Hollywood isn’t about to let a bad idea get in their way, so the Gran Turismo movie isn’t dead. In fact, it may have just picked up a director. Word is that Joseph Kosinski, director of Tron: Legacy and Oblivion is in negotiations to direct the film.
Kosinski is a pretty solid choice to direct a Gran Turismo movie, as his strengths lie in filming sleek, shiny things moving at high rates of speed. Also, Gran Turismo reportedly has a decidedly Tron-flavored plot. According to the lead designer of the games, the movie will be about a gamer who becomes a racer. Does that mean he’ll enter the game Tron-style, or will this movie be about some player using his skills with a DualShock on an actual racetrack? The former scenario may actually be more realistic.
No word on when Gran Turismo will start filming or hit theaters. You’ll just have to make due with the Need For Speed movie until then…
I’ve got the need, the need to ruin my career… speedily.
