This Story Of A Student Growing A Giant Freaking Pumpkin Offers Sweet Respite From The News Cycle

There’s a reason why everyone latched so hard onto Ken Bone this week. We want to be a part of the political process. We need to struggle in order to make progress. But damn if sometimes the conversation doesn’t wear us down. Sometimes, you just need a palate cleanser. Something to change the tone before stepping back into battle.

The story of Ben and his giant pumpkin does just that. In the video above, you can see the joy he takes in growing a massive pumpkin. There’s something ancient in this desire to see a plant outpace our expectations (think: Jack and the Beanstalk) and it’s a very pleasant thee-minute watch.

When Ben, who hails from Kent in the U.K., says, “People could not believe their eyes. Even the judges were surprised.” It’s natural to think, “Gardening, that’s what I need to do more of. Maybe next year I’ll have a really big pumpkin to show off.”

Generally, speaking, it seems to be a solid year for gourds. The Guinness World Record pumpkin was recorded yesterday. It’s huge! Perhaps they grow best when the earth has been salted by the tears of the masses?
