The First Ever Takedown Attempt At An MMA Weigh-In Just Happened And It Did Not Go Well

takedown fail

Between the excruciating effects of dehydration and the intensity of being forced to stand inches away from a person planning to render you unconscious in less than a day’s time, event weigh-ins have always been a bit of a powder keg in the combat sports world. They’ve erupted into verbal back-and-forths (typically involving Michael Bisping), all-out brawls, and even a piss-spraying incident in the past, but if there’s one thing that weigh-ins have been lacking up to this point, it’s the display of a finely-executed takedown.

Or, in the case of the video you’re about to see, a laughably bad takedown attempt.

Scheduled to mix it up in the main event of tomorrow’s Extreme Fighting Championship 52 event in Cape Town, South Africa, featherweights Jadyson “El Diablo” Costa and Don “Magic Man” Madge met on the EFC stage to weigh-in this afternoon.

Not content with waiting until the cage door was closed to go about his business, Costa attempted to kick things off early by shooting for a single leg takedown on Madge right then and there. Unfortunately, Costa was seemingly operating under the belief that the element of surprise would be the only thing he would need to score said takedown, and the end result was about as piss-poor a display of grappling as it was of sportsmanship.

If you think that being shrugged off like a child’s play thing would shake Costa’s confidence even the littlest bit, think again! When asked by the event’s emcee what fans could expect from him when he was actually supposed to fight tomorrow night, the 10-15 fighter did not mince words.

“Expect a knockout,” he said. “I’m going to punch him so hard.”

Well duh, dude. Punching is pretty much the only option you’ve got left after that embarrassing display.
