Deadpool opens next Friday (review here), so we’ve just witnessed the new “Superb Owl” TV spot for the film, aired during the 50th Super Bowl (or the 50th annual celebration of Superb Owls, if you’d like to see it that way, and I do).
“I always wanted to be a professional athlete,” Deadpool says in the introduction to the TV spot, “Because I wanted to have children in cities all over the world.”
We’re starting to get the feeling the promotion for this movie is even better than the film itself, with funny pictures, 12 days of Deadpool, Valentine’s themed pranks, unique billboards. We’re gonna miss this well-handled ad campaign when the movie comes out. And, as surprising as it is to see an R rated movie which almost didn’t get made splashing out the cash for Super Bowl ad time, there’s a good reason for it. Deadpool is currently tracking to make over $55 million in its opening weekend, far beyond original expectations and likely to lead to Ryan Reynolds once again offering to give out sloppy kisses. Someone’s celebrating with chimichangas tonight.
I know I said “chimichangas” just now, but that was a euphemism. We like to keep it classy around here.
