There are countless legendary stories of ’80s rock bands being the most notorious partiers as sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll ruled the music world. All you will hear from those band members 25+ years removed from that time is lamentation for the new generation and claims that their era was better in every way. So, it shouldn’t be surprising that former Guns N’ Roses drummer Matt Sorum believes that the lead singers from his era are better than today’s rock frontmen.
When asked about the difference between lead singers today compared to ’80s legends Sebastian Bach and his former bandmate, Axl Rose, “They’re powerhouses,” Sorum said of Bach and Rose to the Windsor Star via Radio.com, “I think it’s a bit of a lost artform. A lot of the bands that are coming out now, you don’t really hear those kinds of powerful voices… You know, I see bands with lead singers who are really nice. Squeaky clean. And I really don’t feel I’m getting that wild, rock ‘n’ roll sensibility I want.”
Sorum continued on to take a shot at the lead singer and band he believes embodies the complaint he’s lodging, Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters.
“I love Dave Grohl, don’t get me wrong. but he’s a drummer who got out in front with a guitar. Is there really any danger in it? Not really. If you go to a Foo Fighters show, you’re gonna see a band play their set, and everything is gonna go down nice, and he’ll thank the crowd, and everyone’s gonna go home and go, ‘Wow, that was a really nice rock ‘n’ roll show. Not everything went perfect in any of the bands I’ve been in, but I know one thing: People on their way home were going, ‘Holy sh*t. What was that?'”
It appears that Sorum forgot about Grohl’s past with Nirvana and is unaware of the general “badassery” that Grohl has been exhibiting this summer as he continues to play all of his shows on their tour from a throne while in a cast for a broken leg he suffered while on stage. This is another case of revisionist history from someone declaring that their band was better for reasons that don’t exactly make a ton of sense.
