In February, Jason Brian Dalton received the “Uber shooter” nickname after he allegedly went on a shooting rampage in Kalamazoo, Mich. His random spree lasted several hours and spread across the city. In an especially disturbing twist, Dalton reportedly took out victims in between fares, and his passengers said he acted eerily normal while driving erratically. Police arrested him, found a semi-automatic shotgun in his car, and he has since remained in custody.
Court proceedings are now underway, and Dalton faces six murder charges and a smattering of other offenses. On Friday, he attended a preliminary hearing to determine probable cause, and the proceedings turned to chaos. On the stand, survivor Tiana Carruthers — who now uses a cane after the injuries she sustained — described how she pretended to be dead after she was shot. Dalton began to incoherently interrupt her tearful testimony. He took a drink and said, “This tastes like watermelon. I never had that before.” The defendant then ranted about “old people with black bags” and told Carruthers to head to temple.
Perhaps Dalton was intentionally attempting to appear crazy. After all, Dalton told police he was possessed by the devil inside his Uber app. This news video shows the outburst and details the moment where Dalton made a sudden movement in Carruthers’ direction. He was forcibly dragged out by police, and the judge ruled he will stand trial on every charge.
