The saga of Alberto Del Rio as wrestling’s most significant dual-promotion champion has been a complicated one, but it looks like we’re finally getting some long-awaited answers. When he shocked the world at Hell in a Cell and won the United States Championship on his first night back with WWE, it left us wondering what the fate of his AAA Mega Championship would be. There were initially rumors that Del Rio would be allowed a limited set of AAA dates in order to drop the belt, but then we got counter-rumors that WWE was playing defense with their newest returning superstar. Now, it looks like we have confirmation that Del Rio is officially out of AAA.
Not only is Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer reporting the departure, but AAA Executive Vice President Dorian Roldan appeared yesterday on Sirius XM’s Busted Open Radio to address the situation and wish Del Rio the best of luck with WWE.
According to Roldan, it was Alberto’s wish to return to AAA to drop the title, but his contract simply won’t allow him to do so. Such a move wouldn’t have been totally unprecedented, though. If I remember correctly, Daniel Bryan was allowed to honor his independent bookings after returning at SummerSlam 2010, but he wasn’t holding a major title at the time. So, this begs the question: What does AAA do with the Mega Championship? In an interesting parallel to what’s happening with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, AAA plans on holding a championship tournament at their end-of-year show, Guerra de Titanes. Remember, last year’s Guerra was where Alberto won the title from Texano, Jr. Needless to say, it’s been a whirlwind year for one of Mexico’s biggest championships.
