Here’s Bernie Sanders Watching Lucha Libre. No, Seriously.

If you’ve been following the early stages of the 2016 Presidential race, you know about the unexpected success of Bernie Sanders, a Senator from Vermont with a folk album and a message of democratic socialism.

If you haven’t been paying attention to politics and you’re on a wrestling blog, here’s what you need to know: Bernie Sanders went to the Latino Heritage Festival in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday to watch some lucha libre. I’m not kidding. There’s the video evidence. The YouTube version of the clip (taken from Twitter) repeats, but it’s fun to pretend Bernie’s quickly losing interest, then wandering back.

This puts him ahead of every Presidential candidate on the pro-wrestling street cred list except Donald Trump, but chilling out at a Latino heritage festival and watching luchadores is probably hipper than commanding Bobby Lashley to thrash a Samoan savage so Vince McMahon has to shave his head.

Sanders should lean into this. I want him showing up at The Temple for Lucha Underground season 2, chanting “this is awesome” during a Drago and Aero Star dive exchange. Make Dario Cueto his VP. Give me Bernie at PWG taking superkicks from The Young Bucks and getting curb stomped by Super Dragon. I’ll vote for him twice.
