If his friendship with The Nasty Boys wasn’t enough indication, Hulk Hogan’s circle of friends is terrible. WTSP, a Tampa CBS affiliate, has uncovered a million-dollar blackmail scheme against the former WWE Hall of Famer, perpetrated by someone close to his best friend Bubba ‘The Love Sponge’ Clem.
According to their investigation, ‘Spice Boy’ Matthew Loyd (because nobody involved can have a non-cringeworthy name) stole a copy of the sex tape Hulk Hogan made with Bubba’s wife Clem, and attempted to blackmail Hogan for a cool $1 million. The negotiations fell through, with the last sum supposedly being $300k.
Despite the FBI having taped conversations of an attorney for Loyd attempting to negotiate payment amounts through Hogan’s attorney, no charges are being laid. Hillsborough District Attorney Mark Ober says that he’s not sure he could get a conviction. With all of those recorded conversations of actual extortion sourced from the FBI. …okay!
Hogan’s been pretty upfront with his financial issues in the past, so I’m not sure what this guy was expecting. Maybe he would have found more success if he asked to be paid in du-rags? Ripped up T-shirts? Unsold copies of Undiscovered? You shot too high, brother.
Bubba The Love Sponge insists that Ober’s decision not to prosecute Loyd is purely political, and due to his “bombastic personality.” Maybe, like me, a little part of Ober dies inside every time he has to say or type the words ‘Bubba The Love Sponge,’ and it’s just too much to deal with personally, or inflict on the tax-paying public.
Hulk Hogan’s ongoing sex-tape lawsuit against Gawker is back in court this week, so it will be interesting to see if the theft comes into play at all during the proceedings.
