One of the highlights of Sunday’s WrestleMania 32 event was the ending of the Intercontinental Championship ladder match, with Zack Ryder shoving The Miz off a ladder and becoming the new champion.
That took a surprising turn on Monday night, with The Miz defeating Ryder for the Intercontinental Championship with an assist from his wife, 2-time Divas Champion Maryse.
Ryder was trying to give thanks to his dad in the front row when The Miz interrupted, challenging Ryder to a match. Ryder accepted, and an impromptu match was underway. Late in the match, The Miz got in Ryder’s dad’s face and got shoved. That raised the ire of Maryse, who hasn’t been a part of WWE since 2011. She got in Ryder’s dad’s face about the shove, creating a distraction that allowed her husband to hit the Skull-crushing Finale on Ryder and take the title.
So now Ryder is a one-day champion with a great reason to chase the champion, and The Miz gets to be a manipulative opportunist with a charismatic valet. Sounds good.
