Yesterday, former NFL linebacker Shawne Merriman was asked if he would get in the ring with CM Punk were he still in his prime. The answer? Of course he would. The reason? … wait, really?
Picture it. Twitter. 2011. CM Punk is still with WWE, who was then on tour in South America. After an alleged incident of Merriman harassing WWE Divas poolside at their hotel, Punk fired this off:
I know you feel strongly about it, but is that a reason to kick Buffalo when they’re down? Hope you’re not bringing those cheap shots to UFC, bro.
Merriman, also known as “Lights Out” due to his tough reputation and possible penchant for early bedtimes, shot back:
Alright, well, that’s only gonna rank about three fire emojis out of five on the HOT BEEF scale (an actual verifiable scientific measurement of Twitter exchanges), but Merriman has never seemed to let the incident go.
In the above video, Merriman claims that Punk attacked him on Twitter for misunderstanding a totally friendly mutual exchange between himself and former WWE Diva Eve Torres. His current version of events drastically differs from the version Punk told on The Toucher and Rich Show in 2012 when asked about his “Twitter wars” with guys like Merriman and Chris Brown:
“They’re not Twitter wars. They’re not. The Merriman thing isn’t even anything. That dates back a couple of years now. We were in Costa Rica, there was a bunch of us lounging around a pool. I think it was me and Ted DiBiase, we were watching this goof run back and forth. He would literally go into the little poolside gym, do some bicep curls and then walk around us, hoping that some of the Divas would notice. A couple of the girls got up to leave to go get ready for the show and some big fat white guy came out of nowhere and I saw him handing out business cards to the girls.”
Punk went on to explain that the large gentleman was Merriman’s manager/publicist, and that it was Gail Kim who had the biggest issue with him, as Merriman was trying to prevent her from leaving.
It should be noted that it’s a hypothetical situation, and the question to point out that this would only be if Merriman were “in his prime.” Merriman thinks Punk isn’t all that tough because he wore a Speedo to the pool, which is weird because he’s attacking the toughness of a dude who made it way past this stage in his wrestling training and now wants to get punched in the head on the reg:
At the end of the day, CM Punk and Shawne Merriman have come a long way since he helped Punk attack Chavo Guerrero with a Singapore cane in 2008. I guess the lesson here is that things stay on the internet forever, so if you’re gonna call a dude out, maybe at least Google yourself first.
