Sasha Banks Wins The WWE Women’s Championship On Raw

In a huge shocker, the first episode of Raw following the WWE Draft did indeed usher in a new era, in at least one respect. At the top of the show, Stephanie McMahon and Mick Foley announced that Charlotte would be putting her WWE Women’s Championship on the line tonight against No. 1 contender Sasha Banks, who forced Charlotte to tap out in a tag team match — along with her surprise partner, Bayley — during Sunday night’s Battleground pay-per-view.

After a very lengthy and fantastic match in the final hour of Raw, history repeated itself. Banks forced Charlotte to tap out to the Banks Statement to capture the title. Sasha’s only reign as NXT Women’s Champion also began by her defeating Charlotte back in February of 2015.

Many fans expected this match and title change to take place at SummerSlam, but WWE certainly has a way of keeping us on our toes.

Immediately after the match, Byron Saxton joined Sasha for an in-ring interview and really hammered home the moment, saying she is the first new champion of the new era. The crowd gave her a loud and sustained “YOU DESERVE IT” chant while she fought back tears.

She said she’s been dreaming of this since she was a child and her status as champion proves she is the best, and that this is a new era of women’s champion.

She had a dream she hadn’t made it, but it was only a dream. Congratulations, Boss. You really do deserve it.
