On Sunday morning, the baseball world was shaken by the news that Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez and two personal friends died in a boating accident. Fernandez was 24 years old and emerging as one of the best pitchers in all of baseball.
On Wednesday afternoon, the city of Miami and the Marlins franchise held a memorial service for Fernandez, and his teammates led the way during the procession, surrounding the hearse that carried his body. His team walked along the hearse for the entire procession.
Fernandez’s family was also a part of the powerful tribute when they placed his All-Star Game jersey on his casket as he was in front of Marlins Park one last time.

Since Fernandez’s passing, the baseball community has come together and provided some magical moments in baseball. After taking a pitch wearing Fernandez’s helmet, Dee Gordon hit his first home run of the season in the first at bat any Marlins player had following the accident. Many MLB teams paid tribute to Fernandez in their respective dugouts. And Fernandez’s childhood friend and Cardinals shortstop Aledmys Diaz hit an emotional grand slam after visiting with the Fernandez family on Monday.
Baseball will continue to mourn Fernandez as he was one of the most beloved young players in baseball. A private ceremony will be held on Thursday.
