When not complimenting Joaquin Phoenix on his high-waisted pants, Scarlett Johansson is bringing the world that much more closer to total destruction. ScarJo recently signed up as Sodastream’s “global brand ambassador,” which is a fancy way of saying, when you buy a Sodastream, you’ll think of her boobs. Surprisingly, it’s not the blatant sexuality for an otherwise-sexless product that’s upsetting people, or that Sodastream threatens to end RC Cola as we know it — it’s that Sodastream is an Israeli company, and they operate a factory in the West Bank.
Via End the Occupation:
“Scarlett Johansson completely whitewashes Israel’s brutal military occupation and colonization of Palestinian land by asserting SodaStream propaganda that the company is ‘building a bridge to peace between Israel and Palestine,'” said Ramah Kudaimi of the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation. “How can a company based in an illegal settlement and profiting from the abuse of Palestinian rights contribute in any way to peace? Ms. Johansson has come out for occupation and against principles of freedom, justice, and equality. We demand Oxfam respond immediately and drop her as their Global Ambassador in accordance with their own stated position that settlements are a major barrier to peace and contributor to poverty.” (Via)
Johansson released a statement on the controversy, saying, “SodaStream is a company that is not only committed to the environment but to building a bridge to peace between Israel and Palestine, supporting neighbors working alongside each other, receiving equal pay, equal benefits and equal rights.” But…but what about the memes?!?
Look, guys, I think Scoop is a terrible movie, too, but this is getting ridiculous.
