‘Game Of Thrones’ Star Ciaran Hinds Will Step Up The Evil In ‘Justice League’

You may recognize Ciarán Hinds as Mance Rayder from Game Of Thrones or perhaps as the terrifying baddie from a long list of films over the years. And he’s about to bring that same menacing glare and gravitas to Justice League as the main villain, Steppenwolf.

The Wrap reports Hinds will be playing the “motion capture character from an alien planet” whose look will be upgraded from the version of Steppenwolf seen in a Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice deleted scene. At the time we thought the deleted scene was a Darkseid cameo, but then director Zack Snyder confirmed Steppenwolf’s presence when Uproxx’s Mike Ryan visited the Justice League set. This also led us to wonder if Welsh actor Julian Lewis Jones might be voicing the character, but Hinds is a great choice as well.

In the New 52 comics, Steppenwolf is a lieutenant of Darkseid, and he leads the Parademons (the flying figures in Bruce Wayne’s “knightmare”) to attack Earth, killing members of the Justice League in the process. To introduce him to the DC Extended Universe, the film has him chasing the three “mother boxes” (the macguffins), and producer Charles Roven vaguely spoke about those, as quoted by The Wrap:

“[Back] before there was a history… mankind, the Atlanteans — before they were under water — the Amazonians and, actually, the old gods, teamed together and decided that — based on an event that happened — these mother boxes were going to be placed in the care of, as I say, the Amazonians, mankind and the Atlanteans. So that allows us to get into some of those environments.”

Is the event that happened when Steppenwolf left the Night’s Watch to join the Wildlings and rose up to be King-Beyond-the-Wall? Wait, I’m thinking of Game Of Thrones. Nevermind. Justice League opens November 17th, 2017.
