Fans of the 1989 martial arts film Kickboxer haven’t been very pleased with the fact that the film has been remade. It helped soften the blow that the film’s star, Jean-Claude Van Damme, signed on for the remake, but it’s not like he was doing much else, other than trying to convince Sylvester Stallone to let him play his dead character’s twin brother in The Expendables 4. Any attempt to recreate the delightful cheesiness of the original Kickboxer will likely fall short of our expectations, and we’ll simply be left with the bad taste of a cash grab so blatant that the sequel to the remake has already been green-lit.

But maybe this remake won’t be all that bad. Yahoo! Movies has the exclusive new trailer for Kickboxer: Vengeance, which gives us the first look at Van Damme in the role of Kurt Sloane’s (Alan Moussi) teacher, as the student sets out to get vengeance (duh) against Tong Po (Dave Bautista) for beating the hell out of his brother, Eric (Darren Shahlavi). What might make this film enjoyable is the presence of current and former MMA stars like Gina Carano, Georges St-Pierre, Cain Velasquez, and Fabricio Werdum. That’s not to say that it will be a fun movie, but let’s try to be optimistic here.

At least Van Damme’s hat game is stronger than ever.
