CM Punk Made A Cool Million Bucks From His First UFC Fight

Much has been said about CM Punk’s foray into mixed martial arts and his decision to jump right into the deep waters of UFC, both by CM Punk and his many detractors. But we haven’t heard to much from his wife and fellow former pro wrestler AJ Lee, now better known as AJ Mendez Brooks.

AJ was on The Jim and Sam Show to talk about her new book Crazy Is My Superpower: How I Triumphed by Breaking Bones, Breaking Hearts, and Breaking the Rules, and during that interview she revealed some new information on her husband Phil’s first (and so far only) fight with UFC back in September, including a rough idea of how much he got paid.

“I don’t think it hurt that for one night of working he got paid a million dollars, so there’s that,” AJ said, when asked how Punk took his quick two-minute loss to Mickey Gall. “So he came backstage with the most giant smile on his face and he’s incredibly sweaty and I just threw myself on him, it was like ‘I’m so proud of you!’ His speech was just so moving and I try not to get emotional in front of people, so I just went to our little corner and and we were like ‘That’s so f**king cool!’ I’m so proud of him.”

And does Punk still intend on fighting again?

“Yes!” she replied emphatically. “He wants to fight again and I’m never going to be the person that stops him from doing whatever his dream is.”

Even though he got taken down and beaten quickly, Punk still thinks he can compete in the UFC. At this point it may not be a bad idea for the promotion to put him in the cage against a real killer like Vitor Belfort to really underscore the fact that MMA is as real as it gets and people can get seriously hurt in these fights. That way everyone wins: Punk gets his fight, the UFC gets another performance out of one of the biggest draws in the company, and MMA fans get to see a celebrity out of their depth get pummeled for their hubris. Win, win, win.
