Regardless of your feelings on which show is coming out ahead in the brand-split wars, one of the best things to happen since the WWE Draft is the creation of Talking Smack, a live post-show on Tuesday nights that not only recaps Smackdown, but also catches Superstars with their guards down a little bit.
For instance, on the very first episode of Talking Smack, Smackdown Commissioner Daniel Bryan openly criticized John Cena’s remarks about AJ Styles, saying he was “borderline offended” as what his kinda-sorta brother-in-law had to say about the perceived indignity of wrestling in places outside of WWE.
Now, on the latest episode of Talking Smack, Bryan and Renee Young invited Cena himself to talk about his feud with Styles. When Young asked if Styles could ever take Cena’s spot in the company, Cena replied, “I’m openly waiting for someone to step up and do that.”
Bryan then pushed the issue, asking what it would take for someone to overthrow the Face That Runs The Place. Cena’s response?
“Absolute consistency. Everybody asks me, ‘Hey, when are you moving over?’ It just fuels me to get stronger, faster and hone my craft more. People have moments, moments that last in the annals of WWE history. But if you look at what I’ve done, I just show up all the time and deliver. I am waiting for someone after 14 years to show up all the time and deliver. You can ask many other WWE Superstars who know exactly how hard that is. I am just waiting for someone not to do it once, just to do it consistently better.”
Well, there you have it: If you want to take John Cena’s spot, you just have to be better than John Cena — all the time, forever. Guess you better start brushing up on your Mandarin, AJ…
