The Sandlot is 22 years old and showing no signs of aging. The beloved 1993 baseball flick has easily captured the hearts of generation after generation of middle school playground ballers. Unfortunately, however, not all of the original gang has fared as well as the film. While some have gotten s’more out of Hollywood (see what we did there?), others took their talents elsewhere… like to the jailhouse.
Let’s check in on our favorite rough-and-tumble crew.
Tom Guiry – Scotty Smalls
You’re killing us, Smalls.
In 2013, the New Jersey native was arrested for headbutting a cop and trying to kick him in the face at the Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. The issue? An airline employee deemed him too intoxicated to fly. The resulting felony assault of a police officer booked him a first class ticket to jail.
Despite the incident, Guiry, 33, has worked fairly regularly since 1993, somewhat successfully transitioning from child star (he was also in Lassie). He was a series regular in 2007’s The Black Donnellys, was featured in The Fitzgerald Family Christmas, and most recently starred in 2014’s little drama Mahjong and the West, according to IMDb.
Mike Vitar – Benjamin Franklin “Benny the Jet” Rodriguez
While Mike Vitar never made it to the MLB like his onscreen character, he did become a different kind of hero. Vitar joined the L.A. Fire Department in 2002, and was already racking up the honors a short year into his firefighting career. The star, who also had roles in D2: Mighty Ducks and D3 before leaving Hollywood, rescued several fellow firefighters after a roof collapsed during a New Year’s house fire in 2003. The 36-year-old family man, who’s acting career ended in 1997, was married in 2006 and now has two children.
Update: Unfortunately, Vitar also recently found himself in legal trouble and is facing possible jail time stemming from an alleged Halloween assault on a man.
Chauncey Leopardi – Michael “Squints” Palledorous
Squints may have ended up with megababe Wendy Peffercorn, but in real life, Leopardi hasn’t had much luck in love. The star and his wife, who have one child together, called it quits in 2013.
Fortunately, the actor’s career has gone a little better. Soon after The Sandlot, the star had a recurring role in cult favorite Freaks and Geeks, and he briefly popped up in Stars Hollow (Gilmore Girls, keep up). Now 34, Leopardi’s most recent film was thriller Coldwater in 2013.
The actor briefly reunited with Sandlot costar Patrick Renna (batting next) in 2013 in honor of the film’s 20th anniversary, making a joint appearance at a Minnesota Twins game.
Patrick Renna – Hamilton “Ham” Porter
Renna was gifted with the movie’s best one-liners (“You play ball like a girl”) as “Ham,” a role that ultimately led to some impressive parts for the preteen. Renna had main roles in Son in Law and The Big Green, and even guested on The X-Files. But Renna hasn’t found his place in Hollywood as an adult. He appeared on Bones in 2014, and later that year played leading man in dramedy Bad Roomies. He just completed Lavalantula, which appears to be a horror film directed by Steve Guttenberg about a lava-spewing tarantula. So, there’s that.
Marty York – Alan “Yeah-Yeah” McClennan
Oh, Yeah-Yeah. What went wrong? Now 34, Marty York was arrested in 2009 for hitting his girlfriend. A few years later, in 2012, hotel staff in Las Vegas called 911 when they thought they found the actor dead in his room. Luckily, York was just super hungover.
The actor seemed to take a Hollywood hiatus from 1997 to 2011, when he appeared in a movie about two gay brothers who inherit a private men’s gym in Manhattan called The Brothers Sinclair. In 2014, he starred in one of Old Spice’s hilarious commercial parodies. York is fake hawking Executive Spray Tan Parties, which, unfortunately, aren’t a real thing.
Mom – Karen Allen
Karen Allen was already a well-established actress before The Sandlot came along, starring alongside Harrison Ford in 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark. She also had roles in films like Animal House, Scrooged, and Malcolm X.
Allen, 63, continues to work steadily, even reprising her role as Marion Ravenwood in 2008’s Indiana Jones installment. Most recently, the actress appeared in April’s Bad Hurt (with Healy!) and is set to play an empty nester who’s looking for self-redemption in Year By the Sea.
Bill – Denis Leary
Like his onscreen spouse, Dennis Leary has done well for himself in the year’s after slapping a steak on his fake stepson’s eye. The actor has had a slew of leading roles, and has headlined his own series, most notably in the fireman dramedy Rescue Me. Leary, who’s stand-up is well known, has also become a writer and producer over the years. He co-created Rescue Me and will do it all over again with Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll, an FX series about a middle-aged rock ‘n roller, which premieres July 16. At the ripe old age of 57, he apparently gets mistaken for actress Jane Lynch all the time.
Brandon Adams – Kenny DeNunez
Adams, 35, joined Vitar in both Mighty Ducks movies after The Sandlot before making appearances in several Disney Channel series like Sister, Sister and Boy Meets World. Adams now raps under the moniker B. Lee and lent his voice to Disney video games Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II.
Grant Gelt – Bertram Grover Weeks
Gelt’s last credited onscreen appearance was in 1999 TV movie The ’60s. He’s since transitioned from bespectacled onscreen preteen to behind-the-scenes work in the entertainment industry at MasterChannel, a music fan engagement company in Nashville, Tenn. According to Gelt’s LinkedIn, the 35-year-old works as the company’s head of client services, and serves country artists like Brad Paisley and The Band Perry. Talk about a far cry from the diamond.
Shane Obedzinski – Tommy “Repeat” Timmons
Obedzinski has gone from repeating his friends to repeating pizza orders. As of 2013, the 32-year-old owns New York Times Square Pizza in Brandon, Fla. Despite years in the restaurant industry, Obedzinski told the Tampa Bay Times he was motivated by the film’s 20th anniversary to consider getting back into the movie business. “I’m open for anything,” he said.
Victor DiMattia – Timmy Timmons
Much like his fictional brother Obedzinski, DiMattia retired from the film industry not long after The Sandlot. The actor’s final film was a 1994 made-for-TV movie called Children of the Dark. Not much is out there about what DiMattia is up to now, but he does have a public Twitter account where he sometimes tweets about all things Sandlot.
Marley Shelton – Wendy Peffercorn
Time has been good to Shelton, 41. The actress, who stole young boys’ hearts as lifeguard Wendy, looks better than ever and has maintained a fairly impressive résumé. She’s starred in everything from The Lottery and Sin City to Uptown Girls and Pleasantville. She’ll appear in 2015’s Solace with Colin Farrell and Anthony Hopkins.
The actress is married to producer Beau Flynn and the couple has two children together. Despite a hiccup in 2010, when Shelton was sentenced to two years of probation for a DUI, the star has led a fairly charmed life.
