The Justice Coin commercial has been around for a few months, but it gained more recognition over the holiday when folks staying up late — including myself — began spotting it around 3 a.m. on MTV or A&E or The Discovery Channel or any number of other places where it could qualify for the “As Seen on TV” brand. Mixing footage of 9/11 and President Obama’s speech announcing the death of Osama Bin Laden with solemn music, the Historic Coin Mint introduces a “rare” commemorative 24 carat gold coin paying tribute to Seal Team Six “with their distinctive trident and their classified stealth helicopter.” On the other side of the coin, “the tragic reminders, the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, Flight 93, along with the powerful words of our presidents, ‘Justice has been done.'”
Yeesh.
It may be one of the most ridiculously reductive, hilariously crass, shamelessly exploitative ads I’ve ever seen, wrong in more ways than I can possibly count. And the clincher: If you’re one of the first 500 callers, you can get the Operation Geronimo Briefing Pack, a $79 value, yours for free (plus shipping and processing)! In all, that’s $200 worth of faux patriotism for only $20. What a steal.
