Blue Jays’ Fans Threw Hat Onto The Field In Honor Of Edwin Encarnacion’s Monster Day

One of the coolest traditions in hockey is fans honoring a hat-trick by tossing their headwear onto the ice. It’s a tradition that not surprisingly, started in Canada (although both Toronto and Montreal lay claim to being the originators).

Throwing hats onto the ice is pretty commonplace in the NHL, but to my knowledge it’s never been done in Major League Baseball. That is, until Saturday.

Edwin Encarnacion of the Blue Jays has hit a three-run, two-run, and a grand slam in the Blue Jays 15-1 shellacking of the Tigers to give him nine total RBIs on the day. Encarnacion is the first Jays player since Roy Howell in 1977 to have nine RBIs in the same game, tying a club record.

Blue Jays fans have responded by throwing their hats onto the field to honor Encarnacion’s “hat trick” of homers.

Good on you, Canada.

With players like Encarnacion, Jose Bautista, and Troy Tulowitzki, it’s no surprise that the Blue Jays lead the majors in home runs. With the Jays currently leading the Yankees by a game-and-a-half in the AL East, perhaps fans at the Rogers Centre will be able to toss their hats during a playoff game this year too.
