Caitlyn Jenner‘s first post-transition televised interview will air on Ellen on Tuesday, September 8, and, in the meantime, some clips of the interview have been released online. In the above clip, Ellen grills Jenner about her staunchly conservative viewpoints, and how she can stand by a party that actively campaigns against issues that are important to her, both as a woman and a trans person. A fair question! Jenner replies, specifically addressing the topic of gay marriage, and admits: “At first, I was not for it. I mean, I thought, ‘I’m a traditionalist.’ … I mean, I kind of like tradition, and it’s always been a man and a woman. And I’m thinking, ‘I don’t quite get it.'”
Jenner goes on to say that she’s changed her stance on the subject of same-sex marriage, claiming that now she “doesn’t ever want to stand in front of anybody’s happiness.” She then tells Ellen (who you can practically hear thinking, “dafuq?”) that “if that word ‘marriage’ is really, really that important to you, I can go with it.” That honestly seems like the most backhanded way ever of saying that you support gay marriage.
At that point, Ellen calls her out on maybe still not being 100 percent on board, to which Jenner basically responds that she totally is because it’s going to be the “law of the land.” Again, there is a difference between supporting marriage equality because you truly believe that everyone deserves the same right to be happy, and because it’s the law now. Whether or not she likes it, Caitlyn Jenner has positioned herself as a mouthpiece, and, as such, she’s going to have to really think about not just herself, but how various issues affect the trans and LGBT community.
