Gwendoline Christie, actual goddess who walks among us mere mortals, is about to hit in a big way. While Game of Thrones fans have been in the know for a while now, Christie has roles in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 and Star Wars: The Force Awakens this fall, so it is safe to say that her exposure is going to spread. Christie is becoming a franchise veteran, but makes it clear in a recent interview with Variety that the work being done isn’t just mindless action:
“It’s great to be involved in three big franchises, but [they’re] big three big franchises that are looking to expand our consciousness about each other as human beings, and that’s very exciting. They are three enormous things — however, the quality of the writing and the concepts are very, very well developed and very relevant, so everyone seems engaged in the excitement of what these things are doing. All three projects are incredibly progressive, so it feels as though everyone’s caught up with the idea of that, and everyone’s dedicated to giving their absolute best and honoring the set of ideas and setting them forth into the world.”
Her role in the upcoming Star Wars film is the most intriguing. Little is known about the seemingly villainous Captain Phasma, aside from the fact that her costume is totally badass and sure to become a hit with future cosplayers. Christie discusses how director J.J. Abrams helped her to fully embody the character and how the physicality and shrouded femininity of the character required a “mindful” approach.
“It becomes about the way in which you hold your hand, the way in which you walk, where your weight lies and what you want that to mean, and I wanted to give the character identity. I thought it was interesting to make something about the character identifiably female in a non-superficial way, and I hope that comes across.”
While Phasma and Christie’s already iconic Brienne of Tarth do not bear many similarities of character, Christie is pleased to once again be playing “an unconventional kind of woman exhibiting a kind of strength.” Unfortunately, she could not be plied to give any more details on the role, because Disney probably has trained assassins assigned to ensure that their stars remain mum.
Ladies and gentleman, do we need to watch The Force Awakens trailer again? I think so.
