Donald Trump Has Somehow Become The Face of U.S. Soccer, And That’s Not A Good Thing

Well, now you’ve done it, America. It wasn’t enough to let Donald Trump become the face of American politics, we’ve also let him weasel his way into our sports. Saturday night is a huge match for the U.S. Men’s National Team against Mexico for the CONCACAF Cup and the right to represent the region in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia, and thanks to Trump, Mexico has had an entire summer of bulletin board material to use for motivation.

First, TV Azteca cut up Trump’s notorious speech on Mexico for a very clever hype clip last month. Not much for U.S. fans to do there but tip the cap and say see you in Pasadena, until Fox Soccer decided to return the favor with a spot of their own this week–again, using Trump. The problem is it’s a month late, making this reply akin to George Costanza flying to Akron just to zing a guy weeks after the initial insult. It’s getting home from the bar and thinking “Ooh, that’s what I should have said!” and posting it on your foe’s Facebook wall.

Look, Fox, we love that you’re trying to pump people up for a massive rivalry game that has real implications, but this is embarrassing. You missed your chance to reply last month. All you can do now is think a little faster next time.
