As a rule, mashups are usually pretty terrible. The vast majority serve as an embarrassing nod to a time when everyone was having their minds blown on the regular by somebody smashing together Journey and Snap music all willy-nilly (a time we like to call “2006”). But this mashup of Drake’s “Hotline Bling” and Justin Bieber’s “What Do You Mean?” is pretty great.
How did singer/songwriter Brayton Bowman avoid making something awful when mashing up two of the biggest (and most meme-ready) hits of the day? Simple: He didn’t actually make a mashup. Bowman sang the songs himself, weaving lines from both songs together over a wobbly beat that sounds itself like a cross between Disclosure and Diplo. (Dipclosure, if you will.) Now, Bowman needs to figure out a way to add “Hello” to the mix and create the pop music singularity. Stream it up top.
