Former Major League pitcher Tommy Hanson died on Monday after suffering “catastrophic organ failure” in Atlanta’s Piedmont Hospital. Hanson was admitted to the hospital on Sunday after experiencing difficulty breathing, according to local news station WSB-TV. He was 29 years old.
The 6’6 pitcher made his MLB debut with the Atlanta Braves in 2009 and finished the season third in Rookie of the Year voting. He started 21 games, posting a 2.81 ERA with an 11-4 record and 116 strikeouts. He went on to pitch three more seasons for Atlanta before finishing his major league career with the Los Angeles Angels in 2013. After suffering multiple injuries, he attempted to come back with several teams, but never again reached the majors.
There will likely be more details to emerge regarding exactly why or how he suffered the seemingly sudden organ failure, but for now, the baseball world is mourning the loss.
My heart and prayers go out to Tommy Hanson's Family. Enjoy each day. #RIPTommy
