The creators of Once Upon a Time would like to step out of Storybrooke and into your nightmares. Series creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis have a deal in place at ABC Family to provide the network with its first-ever horror series. Y’know, other than Melissa and Joey.
Dead of Summer will offer up thrills, chills, and (time permitting) spills by taking the viewer back to the late ’80s for an experience in summer camp terror. Once Upon scribe Ian Goldberg has been tapped to serve as showrunner and Entertainment Weekly notes that the show was initially pitched as a “John Hughes meets John Carpenter anthology series.” We’re guessing it won’t be Curly Sue meets Ghosts of Mars, but WHAT IF IT IS? (It won’t be.)
Here’s the description ABC Family (read: the future Freeform) provided for Dead of Summer:
“Set in the late 1980s, school is out for the summer, and a sun-drenched season of firsts beckons the counselors at Camp Clearwater, a seemingly idyllic Midwestern summer camp, including first loves, first kisses – and first kills. Clearwater’s dark, ancient mythology awakens, and what was supposed to be a summer of fun soon turns into one of unforgettable scares and evil at every turn. Part coming-of-age story, part supernatural horror story, Dead of Summer is a bold, new series that mixes genres as it examines the light and dark of a summer like no other.”
Bring on the beheaded archery instructors! If they can sneak in something in the vein of Electro City, that’d be swell, too.
