The dark, character-driven Jessica Jones has been a hit with critics and Netflix viewers alike, leading many to wonder when additional episodes of the show will arrive for our binge-watching pleasure. Daredevil was almost immediately renewed for a second season by Netflix, so what about Jessica Jones, a show that’s produced almost as much positive buzz?
Well, unfortunately, things are a bit complicated. The Hollywood Reporter recently sat down with Jessica Jones showrunner Melissa Rosenberg, and she didn’t seem particularly certain about a second season.
“There are logistics involved, because Defenders has to shoot by a certain time, contractually. Actually, I’m not sure; I’m not at all involved in those conversations, much to my dismay. The first question is whether or not we will even get a second season. The second question is, if so, when? Will it be before The Defenders or after? I’d certainly love it to be before but there are things that play into that — time, availability.”
The Defenders is, of course, the eight-part miniseries that will bring the stars of Marvel’s Netflix series (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist) together for an Avengers-style team-up extravaganza. The Defenders won’t start filming until after Luke Cage and Iron Fist debut in 2016, so conceivably another season of Jessica Jones could be snuck in, but perhaps the Marvel overlords want the events of The Defenders to be the next chapter in Jessica Jones’ story.
Don’t get too worried, though; based on how well Jessica Jones has been received, a second season seems inevitable. Let’s just hope the wait isn’t too excruciating.
