For the first time since 2008, we have a WBO heavyweight title holder not named Wladimir Klitschko. And what a name it is: Tyson Fury, an Englishman who won over the eternal Ukrainian by unanimous decision on Saturday night. Though Fury is 27 and Klitschko is 39, the sheer history behind Wladimir made this a big upset.
So, how does a man with a name as fierce as Tyson Fury celebrate such a macho achievement? Why, by serenading his wife (and his fans) with an earnest-if-a-bit-tone-deaf rendition of Aerosmith’s sappy ballad “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing.”
It’s a romantic moment for Mr. and Mrs. Fury, the latter of whom was brought to tears by such a public statement of affection. But that song choice, though…
Even for those who are into the song (and even for those who won’t admit they are), that’s a tall order for an amateur singer. He lays into the vibrato, sure, but the tune requires range he doesn’t have. More power to him, though. It’s a better way to celebrate a championship than saying you’re going to eat someone’s children. Maybe for Fury’s title defense, the weigh-in will also include a karaoke sing-off.
