Between Serial and HBO’s The Jinx, it’s been a banner 12 to 18 months for true crime projects, so it’s not exactly a surprise that other outlets are trying to get involved. One such outlet is Netflix, which just released the trailer for its own murder-based documentary series, Making a Murderer. Here’s how Netflix described the series back when it was announced:
Set in America’s Heartland, Making A Murderer follows the harrowing story of Steven Avery, an outsider from the wrong side of the tracks, convicted and later exonerated of a brutal assault. His release triggered major criminal justice reform legislation, and he filed a lawsuit that threatened to expose corruption in local law enforcement and award him millions of dollars. But in the midst of his very public civil case, he suddenly finds himself the prime suspect in a grisly new crime.
Yes, fine, that all sounds interesting on paper, and about par for the course for a gripping true crime series, but holy hell, did you guys watch that trailer yet? This sucker is really, really intense. Especially once the drums kick in around the one-minute mark. Maybe Serial should try that for season two–dropping some heavy drums into its tinkly piano theme song. Or behind Sarah Koenig’s voice as she talks. Get those NPR-types all amped up.
