Fargo just wrapped up its excellent, violent, and, uh, spaceship-y second season, which brings up an obvious question for the more impatient among us: What’s the deal with season three? We already knew that the third season will take place “a couple years after season one” and that there will be “connections” between this new season and the ones that preceded it (just like how the movie and first two seasons were connected), but in a season two postmortem conference call earlier today, showrunner Noah Hawley shared a few more details:
- Season three won’t premiere until Spring 2017. Said Hawley: “You won’t see it in 2016. It’s a winter show, and we don’t have the time to film this winter.” Production will likely start in November of next year to catch the patented snow-y feel, hence the pushed back start date.
- Season three will be set in 2010.
- Hawley has the first hour written already, and they’re working right now on the basic beats for the rest of the season.
- Even though the new season will only take place a few years after the first, viewers shouldn’t expect to see much (if any) of the season one characters.
Hawley’s point on that last one is that season three isn’t going to open with a title card that says “A Few Years Later…” and Molly Solverson-Grimly getting a phone call about a hot new case. That feels right. The first two seasons have told largely independent stories connected by small threads, so we can probably expect more of that. Personally, I’m still hoping for a full season about the shady guy who sold surveillance equipment and fake urine out of his van in season one. Important to note that Hawley never ruled that out. Also important to note that no one asked. But still. There’s a chance.
