The Minnesota Vikings’ season came to an end in heartbreaking fashion on Sunday afternoon thanks to a total shank by Blair Walsh on a potential game-winning field goal. Walsh had the chance to put his Vikings ahead 12-10 with a 27-yard field goal with under a minute remaining in the game, but – somehow – his chip shot wasn’t even close to going through the uprights.
As you can imagine, this led to absolute dejection on one side, and pure surprise jubilation on the other. Those emotions are quite evident in the radio calls from both the Vikings and Seahawks broadcasts, which you can listen to above.
The Vikings call is great because the broadcasters are hyping up Walsh’s kick and reciting his achievements with the full assumption that he’s about add to them, then the call switches from 100 to 0 real quick as he misses the kick. On the other side, the Seahawks broadcasters approach the moment thinking there’s no chance Walsh will miss the kick, as they’re already scheming about how the ‘Hawks can mount a miraculous comeback following the field goal. Then, when Walsh shanks the kick, their dejected narration turns to excited screaming with little warning.
It’s a safe assumption that these two broadcasts sum up the juxtaposition of emotions from both fanbases. I love the playoffs.
