There’s some serious restructuring going on with the Brooklyn Nets, and if the front office could have their way, much sought-after Kentucky Wildcats coach John Calipari might be a major part of that endeavor going forward. The struggling Nets announced Sunday that they were not only parting ways with head coach Lionel Hollins, but that general manager Billy King was being reassigned from his position as well. According to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, the Nets are hoping that Calipari might be willing to sign on as coach and team president:
One of the major influences in the search process promises to be Nets CEO Brett Yormark, who has remained an immense ally of Kentucky coach John Calipari since Calipari’s late 1990s tenure as Nets president and coach. Yormark has remained a proponent of making a lucrative offer to bring Calipari back to the Nets in a dual president and coaching role, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
Regardless of his history with the organization, Calipari has balked at every NBA team’s efforts to court his services the past several years. Even if they were somehow able to land Calipari, it’s unlikely his presence alone would turn the tide in Brooklyn in the short-term. Team brass ultimately sacrificed their future to acquire Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce in the summer of 2013 and won’t have another first-round draft pick until 2019, although they should have about $40 million in cap space going into free agency this July.
