The California Tunnel Renamed After Robin Williams Finally Gets Its Own Sign

In July, a tunnel located just north of the Golden Gate Bridge on a stretch of the U.S. 101 freeway in Marin County, California was renamed the “Robin Williams Tunnel.” At the time, more than 60,000 people had signed a Change.org petition addressed to California Assemblyman Marc Levine, asking the state legislator to help fans of the late comedian officially change the Waldo Tunnel’s name to honor his memory. Now the renaming of the famous “rainbow tunnel” is complete, as the California Department of Transportation put up new signage bear his name.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle‘s digital outlet, SFGate, the two signs were installed on Monday. Caltrans posted an official photo to one of its official Twitter pages on Tuesday, but Change.org petition founder Julie Wainwright caught an early look at one of the sign’s installations the day before. She tweeted the shot, saying that the new name was “official” and that anyone “driving through the rainbow to or from San Francisco” can see it now.

Per SFGate’s initial reporting on the matter over the summer, the $3,000 cost of constructing and installing the signs was covered by private donations to the cause. No money from the California taxpayers was utilized for the endeavor.
