“They’re not screaming. They’re celebrating.” No, that isn’t a description of Thanksgiving with our families; it’s the new TV spot for Independence Day: Resurgence, acclaimed– er, financially-successful director Roland Emmerich’s sequel to 1996’s Independence Day. As we already know from the Super Bowl trailer and some marketing materials, not all of the aliens died, and humans have reverse-engineered their technology to prepare ourselves for an inevitable showdown. As the official synopsis lays it out, “We always knew they were coming back.”
Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
Included in those heroes are returning actors Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Brent Spiner, Vivica A. Fox, and Judd Hirsch, as well as newcomers Liam Hemsworth, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, and Sela Ward. Not present — because they blew him up, the bastards — is Will Smith, who wasn’t happy about it.
Okay, but they forgot to mention one important original castmember who is totally still alive shut up he’ll never die.
BOOMER LIVES!
