When Ryan Reynolds first appeared as Deadpool — the merc with the mouth — in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, it was generally thought among many that the character would disappear in the wake of that film’s enormous critical drubbing. Reynolds, acting as producer of Deadpool, worked hard to bring the character back from the brink of death, and the gamble paid off generously. The film grossed almost $760 million worldwide — it’s one of the best reviewed Marvel films, and one of the most successful R-rated movies of all-time.
With winning hands comes more bets, and Reynolds, his Deadpool director Tim Miller, and parent company Fox, are all betting on a sequel to the hit film surpassing the grosses and critical love the first incarnation brought them. At CinemaCon this week, Fox made it official: Deadpool 2 is set to go into pre-production. It remains to be seen if supporting players like TJ Miller and Morena Baccarin will show up in the sequel, but if Fox is looking to duplicate its magic, it’s very likely they’ll return.
Deadpool was written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and the scribe duo will next work with Reynolds on the sci-fi film Life, also starring Jake Gyllenhaal. No timeline has been announced for Deadpool 2 as of this writing.
