Television doesn’t do many crossover episodes anymore. In recent memory, I can only recollect a few: Law and Order and Homicide: Life on the Street, Arrested Development and Law & Order, and Abed’s appearance in Cougar Town followed by Laurie’s brief, background cameo in an episode of Community. Back in the day, it was a little more common: Mork and Mindy crossed over with Happy Days, and Happy Days crossed over with Laverne and Shirley and, more recently, Seinfeld and Mad About You did a crossover episode. I suppose you could also count crossover episodes between spin-off shows in the same universe, like Buffy and Angel and Doctor Who and Torchwood.
ANYWAY, Happy Endings — the second most GIFable sitcom on television — will now be doing a crossover episode with Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt. 23. Kind of.
From TV Guide:
The crossover — of sorts — will take place during Apartment 23’s Halloween episode, in which we’ll learn that June (Dreama Walker) is a Happy Endings fan. “June makes a video on her iPhone,” Apartment 23 creator Nahnatchka Kahn tells us, likening the video to the ones ‘shippers make for their favorite TV couples. “She does it for Chloe [Krysten Ritter] and one of the Happy Endings guys.”
OK. Actually, that’s kind of lame. All we get is a YouTube video on Apt. 23 with ONE, unspecified male character from Happy Endings? If they want to do this right, there should be an episode in which James Van Der Beek auditions for a role in Happy Endings on an episode of Apt. 23 followed by an episode of Happy Endings in which Van Der Beek plays the character for which he auditioned. Maybe that character was meant to be a series regular, but because of some crazy hijinks in which Van Der Beek confuses a testy Damon Wayans, Jr. for his Dad, the Van Der Beek character is killed off, delivering another blow to Van Der Beek’s comeback.
This idea, on the other hand, is just goofy marketing synergy. That said, I do hope that June chooses Brad. Brad twirls.
Happy Endings and Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt. 23 return on Tuesday.
