Is the Death Wish remake ever going to get off the ground? Eli Roth sure hopes the third time is the charm. Deadline announced today that the horror director behind Hostel and The Green Inferno will be sitting in the director’s chair for the Bruce Willis-led film. Is that chair comfortable, Roth? It should be, because there’s been a lot of butts in it.
We mentioned back in March that it looked like the long-rumored remake of the 1974 Charles Bronson shoot-’em-up action flick was on a path towards production when the Israeli duo Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado were set to be the directors to lead the S.S. Death Wish. Well, according to Deadline the directors of the 2014 thriller Big Bad Wolves left the project last month over creative differences between Bruce Willis and MGM/Paramount, the studio behind the project. Before Keshales and Papushado, Smokin’ Aces director Joe Carnahan was originally hired to direct the film which he also wrote. Since then, the script has been in the hands of countless other writers and directors including a recent revision by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski.
Despite the revolving door of directors, Bruce Willis is still slated to play a vigilante named Paul Kersey who goes on a rampage after a gang terrorizes his family. Death Wish has the potential to be a decent franchise, but seeing as how several directors have now dropped out of the project it could also be in production hell for quite awhile.
