Elon Musk’s Brother Is Launching A Farm-To-Table Restaurant Serving $5 Meals

Back in February, we brought you news of an organic fast-food drive-thru joint owned by professional basketball player Ray Allen. We also covered Roy Choi’s Locol, in Watts. Now another entrepreneur is fueling the health food train with an organic grab-and-go restaurant that’s not only healthy and sustainable but affordable too. As in $5 meals affordable.

Kimbal Musk, the brother of Tesla CEO Elon Musk, has announced plans to open a new grab-and-go style restaurant called The Kitchenette, housed in the visitor’s center at Shelby Farms Park in Memphis, Tennessee.

Before getting into the food game, Musk worked in Silicon Valley with his brother but left to attend culinary school. He and The Kitchenette co-founder Hugo Matheson already have two farm-to-table chains called The Kitchen and Next Door, with locations in Denver, Boulder, Chicago, and Memphis. They are set to open five more locations next year.

Their plan with The Kitchenette is to source from local farmers and use only organic ingredients. Musk hopes to keep prices low by focusing his menus on what’s in season.

Musk’s passion for sustainable, healthy eating is no joke and he has the power to do a lot of good. Five years ago he founded a nonprofit called Learning Gardens that helps kids learn about healthy foods while providing produce to some of his restaurants.

By pairing Learning Gardens programs with restaurants in a handful of cities, Musk hopes to create a lasting impact on communities and develop deep, meaningful relationships with farmers. Oh, and he also wants to completely shift how we understand food. Fair bit of ambition in that family.
