Whether you, your siblings, parents, grandparents, or aunts and uncles have endured it, divorce is almost never an enjoyable subject. That being said, HBO’s new dark comedy, Divorce, created by Catastrophe‘s Sharon Horgan and being executive produced by NewsRadio and Larry Sanders Show alum Paul Simms, might change this perception for some. Along with stars Sarah Jessica Parker and Thomas Haden Church, the two halves of the show’s married-but-soon-not-to-be couple, Divorce just might be the comedic shot this otherwise soul-crushing subject needs.
The 10-episode series focuses on Frances (Parker), a married woman who begins to question the validity of her relationship with her husband Robert (Church). According to the short teaser HBO dropped on Wednesday, the pair’s initial approach to the prospect of separation doesn’t go well. There don’t appear to be any headline-grabbing fights or standoffs with the police, per se, but middle fingers and passive aggression abound in what follows.
At least until, during a brief, peaceful moment between the two, Frances suggests their separation “could be the greatest thing that has happened to us.” A do-over like this, she argues, could let them “go back to just liking each other again.” That is, if Robert gets rid of the offending mustache.
In addition to Parker and Church, Molly Shannon, Talia Balsam, Tracy Letts, Sterling Jerins and Charlie Kilgore also star. Divorce premieres on HBO some time in the fall.
