Now that Prince is gone, his possessions that were given to friends and family or previously purchased at auction have seen a huge bump in their value, with his iconic “Yellow Cloud” guitar that he used from the late-80’s to the mid-90’s (AKA his best times) being the latest to be sold for a huge sum. It was purchased by none other than Colts owner and billionaire Jim Irsay for the cool $137,500 at Heritage Auctions in Beverly Hills (which also saw a lock of David Bowie’s hair go for $18,750).
You’ve no-doubt seen the guitar. It was played during Prince’s classic performance of “Gett Off” at the MTV Music Awards.

And was also front and center in his video for “Cream,” which is this author’s favorite Prince song.

Here’s the breakdown on the axe, which has a letter of authenticity by one of Prince’s old guitar techs, Zeke Clark.
“This Yellow Cloud guitar was Prince’s main guitar & used in most of his early videos & touring performances & album recordings. From around 1988-1994.”

Irsay has a classic instrument collection that rivals the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He famously purchased one of Ringo Starr’s 1963 three-piece drum sets for $2.2 million, owns John Lennon’s “Paperback Writer” Gretsch and a load of other instruments from the likes of Jerry Garcia to Bob Dylan. Considering Prince played the Super Bowl Halftime show when his Colts beat the Bears, it seems like this item will have a special place in his collection.
