It looks like Matthew McConaughey is looking for a new way to expand his horizons. According to reports, the Academy Award winner will be returning (in a way) to his alma mater, University of Texas at Austin, in order to teach a film class. He’s teaming up with Gary Ross, who recently directed him in Free State Of Jones, to teach 30 students about behind the scenes filmmaking through a series of pre-recorded videos. He will also visit the class at least once because he’s just that kind of guy.

Now, this may be a more hands-off approach than James Franco took into academia, but it’s cool to see a star as big as McConaughey give back to the university that gave him so much. As a temporary professor, he’ll be able to make a difference to a new generation of filmmakers. In our post-McConaissance world, that’s a pretty huge deal. McConaughey’s love of Austin and the Longhorns is well-documented, so this is just another step for a Texas boy making good.
While it would be incredible if he could deliver his lectures in character as Rust Cohle, this is certainly the next best thing.
