In Netflix‘s stable of Marvel shows, Jessica Jones stood out for the many issues that it deftly handled in its first season. Between interracial relationships, PTSD, and dealing with various types of abuse, Jessica Jones tackled a lot head on without ever becoming preachy. Jessica’s (Krysten Ritter) relationship with the absolutely wicked Kilgrave (played to chilling perfection by David Tennant) was at the forefront of the narrative, and many were left wondering where the second season would go without his menace.
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Melissa Rosenberg explains that much of the focus will be put on her friendship with Trish (Rachael Taylor).
“I’m interested in continuing to explore the relationship between Trish and Jessica. That is the core relationship in the piece. It is about female friendship, it is about how friends evolve — they’re sisters, really — and it’s about how they evolve and ping off each other. I’m interested in relationships, whether they be romantic, or family, or friends, or professional — that’s what’s interesting to me, is Jessica in relationship to people.”
This emphasis shouldn’t be a surprise to fans of the show, as her friendship with Trish is what ultimately gives her the final push to end Kilgrave. As people on the internet are inclined to do, many read an almost romantic subtext to their relationship, and Rosenberg seems to be on board, but emphasized that this was probably not where the show was headed (write your own fanfic, nerds).
“A lot of people saw that in their relationship. Honestly, I love that people are seeing that. I’m fine with that. It’s not what interests me about their relationship. To me, it’s about their history, and their trust and connection.”
Still, the two women began the series estranged, and with Jessica becoming more in tune with her powers and Trish taking on a more active role in her own safety, it will be a wonder to watch these two grow in the next season. Unfortunately, there is a bit of a wait before we’ll get a chance to see it, as Jessica Jones only has a vague 2018 release date.
